2023 Flooring Trends Thus Far

Posted July 28, 2023

With products and trends constantly developing, there’s always something new when it comes to flooring. Whether it’s a style from decades gone by making a comeback, or a timeless design still holding its own, the latest flooring trends are a great starting point when thinking about your floors and offer an endless amount of inspiration. Let’s take a look at the flooring trends we’ve observed so far this year and some standout products.

1. Large Format Maximalist Flooring

Whether in the form of tiles, engineered timber planks, vinyl, laminate or hybrid planks, or rugs, bigger is better! Gone are the days of tiny tiles, narrow boards and small rugs that make a space feel smaller and more confined. As well as looking effortlessly stylish, large format flooring causes a room to feel bigger and more spacious. Flooring that is generous in size also contributes to a minimalist style scheme which allows homeowners to create a space that is simple but still stylish and functional without clutter or overwhelm.

The TimberTop range by Jacobsen is a stunning engineered timber flooring in a wide board measuring 2130mm by 240mm. Available in a beautiful selection of colours and in two finishes, Timber Top is an excellent choice for those after large format flooring that offers timeless style that will look great for years to come.

2. Textured Carpets

The last few years has seen a demand for carpets that are more tactile and textural, creating an experience that appeals not only visually, but also to our sense of touch. Loop pile and plush pile carpets that you can really sink your feet into have made a comeback and we believe they are here to stay. Offering a lovely sense of comfort and cosiness that can be both seen and felt, we can see why! Textured carpet also provides visual depth and a sense of layering which adds interest and dimension to a room or space.

From a performance point of view, textured carpet helps to hide dirt and wear and tear, making it a stylish option that is highly practical too. Belgotex have recently released some new carpet ranges in response to this desire amongst customers for textured carpets. Moroccan Berber is a 100% stain proof solution dyed nylon loop pile carpet that looks and feels incredibly wool-like. Available in 7 stunning colours, it’s a great choice for those wanting the appearance of a wool carpet with the performance of solution dyed nylon carpet at a great price. Amore is a high frieze pile carpet - almost like the shag pile carpet of the 1970’s but reimagined with a modern, luxurious twist.  Both of these new ranges deliver exceptional style and practicality and are undoubtedly on trend as textured carpets.

3. Bold Pattern & Design

If you want to be a bit brave with your flooring by incorporating bold and funky pattern and design, you’re really spoilt for choice when it comes to sheet vinyl! If you can think of it, chances are, it’s likely available in sheet vinyl form! Strong geometric designs as well as classic heritage patterns have both been given a look in and continue to be an affordable option for those wanting to create a unique feature out of their flooring.

A neat development in vinyl flooring is the recent advent of digitally printed vinyl. The Digital Evolution range by Belgotex is a great example of just what is possible with new technologies – we have 3 different digitally printed sheet vinyl’s installed here in our offices, they certainly create a point of difference and become a talking point!

4. Timeless & Light Neutrals

For those who shrink back at the thought of bold colour and pattern, don’t despair! Light, neutral tones in flooring remain as popular and timeless as ever and provide a solid foundation from which to build the rest of your style scheme around. Whether you’re after a cooler grey, warm beige or soft blonde hue, you’re bound to find carpet or hard flooring to suit your space and style. Choosing light neutral colours makes it much easier to change other less permanent aspects of your décor such as cushions, throws and accessories. Robert Malcolm offer excellent ranges in both carpet and vinyl planking in a selection of classic neutrals that will endure in both style and function for years to come.

5. Sustainable Options

This comes as no surprise as consumers become increasingly conscious of their buying habits and the wider reaching impacts of these habits. In terms of flooring, many customers are no longer happy with products that are just visually appealing and functional; they must be kind to the environment too. Fortunately, our suppliers have; and continue to respond to this shift in the mind-set of our customers and there are many sustainable flooring options on the market and new ones being introduced as they are developed. One of our all-time favourite sustainable products would have to be Bremworth carpets and rugs made from 100% New Zealand wool. Wool is a fully biodegradable material as well as being renewable. It offers excellent performance and makes beautifully stylish carpet and rugs that our customers fall in love with.

6. Form Follows Function

Being a big ticket item, flooring is not typically something purchased often. Because of this, customers are understandably after quality. Yes, they want floors that look beautiful but they need floors that can perform and handle a bit of life. This is why, first and foremost, floor coverings must be durable and practical and suitable for the home in which they are being installed in and the lifestyle they will be exposed to. The Kenzie range of vinyl planks by Signature Floors tick all the boxes when it comes to functionality. With a heavy duty commercial rating and an impressive 0.55mm wear layer, these planks are as tough as they come! This quality flooring comes in 8 authentic looking timber tones and is super low maintenance, what’s not to like?
