Choosing The Right Underlay For Your Home

Choosing the right underlay and understanding what you are getting.

This is such an important part of the process in selecting your new flooring.
You want to ensure that you purchase a good quality underlay that will last in a good condition for the life of your carpet.

Some key components in choosing a good quality underlay include:

  • High level of underfoot comfort and resilience
  • Minimal levels of acoustic transfer - especially important for two-storey homes
  • Increased insulation value to ensure minimal heat loss
  • Greater longevity from your carpet

At The Flooring Centre, we supply and install three main types of underlay, as outlined below.

Foam Chip Underlay Types
  • Classic 95kg / 10mm Bonded Foam: Heavy duty foam underlay suitable for heavy duty wear areas of any home, including stairs, hallways, game rooms etc.

  • Supreme 130kg / 11mm Bonded Foam: A beautiful quality foam underlay suitable for the toughest wear areas but with supreme underfoot comfort.
Supreme also has excellent acoustic transfer value.

  • Memory Foam 130kg / 11mm Bonded Memory Foam: The ultimate foam underlay that brings luxurious comfort and double the acoustic benefits of Supreme.
It is endorsed by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, as well as being suitable for the toughest wear areas and offers even better underfoot comfort.

When purchasing underlay, one of the most important things you should do is always ask for the density and look beyond the thickness. Although thickness does have some bearing on quality, the most important aspect is the density (weight per cubic metre) as this is what will ensure the underlay lasts and retains it's shape and resilience over the years.

The overall thickness of underlay has its limits and The Flooring Centre team do not recommend using greater than 11mm in thickness as this can cause future issues of re-stretching the carpet. This is because the underlay will be considerably higher than the smoothedge tackless strip installed at the perimeter of your rooms.

In store, we have examples of what each of the above underlay types feel like underfoot as a point of comparison, so feel free to visit our showroom so you can make the best decision for your home.
