Flooring Forecast 2025

Posted February 3, 2025

Now that we’re well and truly into 2025 we thought it a good time to have a look at what’s forecast to be on trend in flooring for this year. From warm timbers to large format tiles and planks, many of the trends from 2024 are carrying through into this year with some exciting new ones too. Let’s dive into what we can expect from flooring this year!

1.       Warm Woods

We’ve had the era of super light floors inspired by the Scandi aesthetic that swept through the interior design world. The last year or so has seen more of a shift back to the middle with mid and darker brown tones making a comeback, especially when it comes to timber. This is largely due to the ambience and natural vibe that these warmer, more organic hues provide. Think honey and walnut toned browns – they add instant warmth and character to a space without being overpowering and when paired with the right soft furnishings and furniture they provide timeless style that won’t date. The TimberTop engineered timber flooring collection by Jacobsen has some stunning colour options. A couple of our favourites are Coronet Peak, a deep chocolate brown that oozes warmth and class, and Tenerife, a lovely honey hue with beautiful variation and ambience.

2.       Earthy Tones

Tying in with the warm timbers are earthy tones that bring a touch of nature inside. Think tiles, carpet and rugs in brown, terracotta, navy blue, moss green, copper and deep burgundy. These are all colours we should expect to see make their mark this year in interior design. Injecting natural warmth, cosiness, and a sense of calm into a space, these colours are grounding and act as a design anchor. With that being said, it’s no surprise that the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2025 is Mocha Mousse, a muted brown that takes us back to the simplicity of nature.  Bremworth’s Ahuru, a luxurious plush pile carpet made from premium New Zealand wool, has a gorgeous colourway inspired by earthy tones. We especially love Kamahi and Kiokio; these gorgeous brown tones embody comfort and understated elegance.

3.       Botanical and Floral Designs

No longer reserved for your Grandma’s table cloth or curtains, botanical and floral designs and patterns are back with a contemporary and bold twist. When it comes to flooring, florals make a real statement on rugs with bright hues and custom designs making real impact. No longer just a practical inclusion to provide comfort underfoot, rugs have taken on a whole life of their own, setting the tone of a space and allowing homeowners to reflect their unique style. We love the bespoke designs from Signature Floors which feature stunning florals in tones of blue and purple. We won’t be surprised if we see a resurgence of Axminster carpets in floral designs too. Traditionally only used in commercial settings, the right design can look absolutely stunning in both modern and traditional residential settings. With “off the shelf” and custom designs both available, Axminster is worth exploring if you’re after something bespoke to perfectly suit your unique space and design vision.

Bold floral and botanical designs are set to be big this year. We love these designs from Signature Floors, rugs are a great way to make a style statement while also being a way to define and separate different zones in an open plan space.

4.       Parquet Flooring

We believe parquet flooring has gone beyond just being a trend now. Firmly established as a timeless flooring style, it’s perfect for those wanting the look of timber with a bit of an extra flourish. In its purest form, parquet designs are made from timber and are an excellent way to minimise waste and utilise materials well. However parquet designs are now also available in sheet vinyl, vinyl plank and laminate flooring meaning whatever your budget, you can achieve this timeless look. With endless variations and options, parquet adds a sense of artistry, interest and individuality to a space. Herringbone, a timeless zig zag pattern that adds elegance and enhances room proportions continues to be a favourite with our customers. Chevron, an arrow-like design that elongates a space is also popular. Hurfords Genuine Oak Parquetry remains a top seller for homeowners after this stylish aesthetic. For those wanting to achieve this look on a smaller budget, Zenku Artec laminate by Woodland Lifestyle and Camaro vinyl plank by Polyflor offer a great range of parquet options that offer an incredible true-to-life appearance!

5.       Sustainable Options

This one is likely no surprise. Eco-awareness and sustainable thinking continues to grow as people become increasingly informed about the wider impact of their buying decisions. With everything from the food we eat to how we dress and furnish our homes under scrutiny, flooring is no exception. The flooring industry has a number of certifications representing commitments to environmental responsibility, health standards and ethical supply. Here in New Zealand, one of the more well-known certifications is the Forest Stewardship Council (abbreviated to FSC). Flooring with the FSC label has been proven to use wood that comes from well managed forests that meet strict environmental and social standards. Buying FSC certified flooring aids in conserving biodiversity and supports local communities. The stunning TimberTop range from Jacobsen is FSC certified, giving customers flooring that not only looks good but is good for people and the planet too.

6.       Textured Carpets

They’ve been back for a while and in the last few years especially, textured carpets have really proven they’re here to stay. There will of course always be a place for standard cut pile carpets but textured loop and textured cut piles offer the tactile nature and depth many homeowners and designers are after. Besides stylish aesthetics, textured carpets also offer excellent durability and have good ability to lessen the impact of tracking, due to their design and fibre structure. When textured carpets first made their comeback loop pile styles were dominant. The last year or so however has seen more textured cut piles introduced to the market. Offering a sense of nostalgia, longer cut pile and frieze style carpets are a nod to casual and relaxed 1970’s interiors. Bremworth’s Te Aroha, a luxurious textured cut pile made from premium felted wool, introduces luxurious texture and depth into a space as well as plush comfort underfoot. Typically constructed from wool, there are also now an increasing number of textured carpets made from nylon joining the fold. In most cases this makes textured carpets a more affordable option as wool carpets are usually in a higher price range. An excellent example of this is Jacobsen’s Acacia Hill. Seamlessly combining the practical benefits of solution-dyed nylon with the aesthetic appeal usually associated with wool, this range features contemporary heathered colours and a structured texture, making it an ideal choice for modern interiors.

7.       Large Format Hard Flooring

Just like in 2024, bigger is better in 2025. Longer planks and larger tiles are still in demand and show no signs of slowing down. Homeowners and designers love the sense of scale that large format flooring provides – opening up areas and making a space feel grand and vast. European Hardened Timber, a new product to the hard flooring market, offers large format planks that make an impressive impact. The Bjelin XL range by Belgotex boasts a 2.2 metre long plank with a width of 206mm. These expansive boards are perfect for large open plan areas; elongating the space and making it appear larger. The use of larger planks also means fewer lines and joins making for minimal visual clutter, reinforcing the sense of spaciousness created. When it comes to tiles, 1200 x 600mm and 900 x 900mm continue to be popular sizes due to the seamless and sophisticated look they achieve. The Mineral tile range from Tilemax in 1200 x 600mm is a great option for bathrooms, giving the illusion of space with minimal grout lines.

8.       Low Maintenance, Easy Care Hard Flooring

With life becoming increasingly busier, homeowners need and want flooring that requires minimal maintenance and that can be cleaned quickly and easily. When it comes to hard flooring, vinyl plank and laminate tick both of these boxes. A quick sweep or vacuum followed by a damp mop and your floors will continue to look good as new! Being durable and hardwearing, vinyl and laminate require little maintenance while still delivering plenty of style. In terms of durability, laminate has the edge over vinyl plank, offering superior scratch, fade and stain resistance. However for those needing tough flooring on a lighter budget, there are plenty of vinyl planks that can handle a whole lot of life! Kenzie vinyl planks from Signature Floors pack a punch with commercial specifications and priced at just $39.00 per square metre in our Clearance Depot, this great flooring proves itself time and time again as a winner with our customers.

Kenzie Vinyl Planks from Signature Floors are a top seller in our Clearance Depot due to their affordability, durability, timeless style and easy care construction.
