Feature Home | Fendalton, Christchurch

Following the earthquake Anne and Barry chose to rebuild instead of renovating their existing home that backed onto the beautiful Riccarton Bush and Avon River - and the results are stunning.

After deciding that in a location like theirs they needed to do the home justice, they opted for a modern build that would give them open plan living from the living and kitchen out to the pool area off the lounge.

Timber: Spotted Gum from the Naturals Collection by Godfrey Hirst

The moment you walk in the front door you are met by stunning Spotted Gum timber that runs the length of the hall to the brightly lit living spaces, and a textured carpet staircase taking your eye up to meet the cathedral ceilings of the kitchen and living space.

The luxurious kitchen and living area feature the beautiful spotted gum timber floor that warms the large space. Having had oak before, Anne and Barry thought change was in order and stepped into the unknown with an Australian hardwood. The spotted gum can look a little scary on the samples with it's unique appearance that varies from light blonds through to darker browns. The variance is what gives the beautiful end appearance but can be hard to envision installed.

One of the reasons Anne was keen to share photos of the install was because she had struggled herself during the build to find photos that did the timber justice. Several samples were ordered to help confirm that they were on the right track with their selection, the timber was finally ordered, installed - and they are really happy with the result.

When laying the timber our installer worked hard to get the right layout of timber lengths mixed with the variance in colour for the best results. As timber is a natural product there is variation in timber from knots and natural colour flow through to how it ages and fades; hence it can be difficult to choose from the samples.

The timber, warm in colour and of mixed hue helps to tie timber furniture and features together; this has worked beautifully with the cathedral ceilings and the crisp white walls Anne and Barry have chosen for their new home. Modern homes can sometimes feel echoey or cold, especially where high ceilings are involved, however this home is warm, inviting and luxurious.

Carpet: Ravine in colour Pewter from Godfrey Hirst

To complement the Spotted Gum floor Anne and Barry chose a grey textured wool carpet that beautifully complements the timber floor while itself making a statement. This textured carpet is amazing to walk on, adds depth to a large living space and being wool adds extra insulation to the floor and helps to regulate the temperature of the home.
